Mathematical symbols – absolute value


The mathematical sign of absolute value, represented by the symbol “IxI” is used in mathematics to indicate the distance of a number x from zero on the number line.

Interesting property of the absolute value is its symmetry. |x| is equal to |-x| for any real number x. This symmetry reflects the idea that the distance of a number from zero is the same, regardless of whether the number is positive or negative.

The origin

Originating in the early 19th century, the absolute value was introduced by French mathematician Augustin-Louis Cauchy. Cauchy’s work in calculus and mathematical analysis led him to develop the concept of the absolute value. He recognized the need for a clear and concise notation to express this idea, especially in the context of limits and continuity in mathematical functions.

Initially, mathematicians used a single bar over a number to denote its absolute value. As mathematical notation developed, vertical bars began to be used as a more standardized way to express the absolute value. The transition from a single bar to vertical bars represented a clearer and more widely adopted notation. The use of double-bar notation, as in ∣x∣, became prevalent over time. The double-bar notation offers a visually more distinct and easily recognizable symbol for absolute value. The double-bar notation for absolute value became widespread as mathematical notation and terminology underwent standardization in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Function

The primary function of the absolute value symbol (|x|), is to yield the numerical distance of a real number ‘x’ from zero on the number line, regardless of its sign. This ensures that the result is always positive or zero.

For instance, consider the example |−5|. The absolute value of −5 is 5, as it represents the distance of −5 from zero on the number line without considering the direction. By enclosing the number within the absolute value notation, mathematicians can consistently obtain a positive value, simplifying calculations and aiding in the interpretation of mathematical expressions.

Use

The absolute value symbol (|x|), finds extensive application in various mathematical branches, including algebra and calculus. Here its versatility shines in simplifying expressions and solving inequalities.

  1. Algebra:
    • In algebra, the absolute value is often employed to simplify complex expressions involving variables.
  2. Calculus:
    • In calculus, the absolute value is commonly used when dealing with limits and continuity. It allows mathematicians to express the distance between points on a function without worrying about the direction.
    • When dealing with derivatives and integrals, the absolute value helps simplify expressions and handle cases where the function changes its behavior at certain points.
  3. Inequalities:
    • Absolute values are fundamental in solving and manipulating inequalities.
    • The absolute value helps express the idea that the difference between two quantities should fall within a certain range, irrespective of their individual signs.

The absolute value concept is prevalent in physics, particularly in situations involving displacement and distance. For instance, when calculating the total distance travelled by an object, the absolute value helps account for changes in direction, ensuring a positive value is obtained.
