2D shapes – rhombus

A rhombus is a four-sided flat shape (also known as a quadrilateral) with four equal-length sides. It is similar to a square, but its opposite angles are not necessarily 90 degrees. In a rhombus, the opposite sides are parallel to each other, and the diagonals (lines that connect opposite corners) bisect (divide into two parts) each other at a 90-degree angle. The area of a rhombus can be calculated by multiplying the lengths of the two diagonals and dividing the result by 2.

The word “rhombus” comes from the Greek word “rhombos”, which means “spinning top”. This is because the shape of a rhombus is similar to that of a spinning top, which has a symmetrical rotation around its axis.

Additionally, the rhombus has some interesting properties related to its angles and sides. For example, the opposite angles of a rhombus are always equal, and the sum of the squares of its diagonals is equal to four times the square of one of its sides. These properties make the rhombus a useful shape in geometry and mathematics.

Difference between rhombus and parallelogram:

In a rhombus, all the four sides are equal and the diagonals intersect at 90 degrees, whereas in a parallelogram, the opposite sides are equal and the diagonals bisect each other.
