Parts of speech

A word class, also known as a part of speech, is a category of words that are grouped together based on their function in a sentence. There are several different word classes, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections.

Nouns are words that refer to people, places, things, or ideas. For example, “dog,” “Paris,” and “happiness” are all nouns.

Verbs are words that describe actions or states of being. For example, “run,” “think,” and “be” are all verbs.

Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns. For example, “happy,” “red,” and “delicious” are all adjectives.

Adverbs are words that describe or modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. For example, “quickly,” “happily,” and “very” are all adverbs.

Prepositions are words that show the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in the sentence. For example, “in,” “on,” and “under” are all prepositions.

Conjunctions are words that connect clauses or phrases in a sentence. For example, “and,” “but,” and “or” are all conjunctions.

Interjections are words that express strong emotion and are often used at the beginning of a sentence. For example, “wow,” “oops,” and “ah” are all interjections.
